A monkey born from a stone nourished by the Five Elements, who learns the art of the Tao, 72 polymorphic transformations, combat, and secrets of immortality, and through guile and force makes a name for himself as the Q\u00edti\u0101n D\u00e0sh\u00e8ng or \u201cGreat Sage Equal to Heaven\u201d. His powers grow to match the forces of all of the Eastern (Taoist) deities, and the prologue culminates in S\u016bn\u2019s rebellion against Heaven, during a time when he garnered a post in the celestial bureaucracy. Hubris proves his downfall when the Buddha manages to trap him under a mountain and sealing the mountain with a talisman for five hundred years. Dismayed that \u201cthe land of the South knows only greed, hedonism, promiscuity, and sins\u201d, the Buddha instructs the bodhisattva Gu\u0101ny\u012bn to search T\u00e1ng China for someone to take the Buddhist sutras of \u201ctranscendence and persuasion for good will\u201d back to the East. The Guanyin enlightens Chen Xuan-zang to let him go to the west. The Emperor Taizong takes Xuanzang as his younger brother, and grants him the name \u201cSan Zang\u201d. Tang-zang saves Sun Wu-kong from the mountain, and Sun Wu-kong is given a Jin Gu(wore in the head) by Guanyin. They master and apprentice keep on going. They conquered Bai Long in Ying Chou Jian, and Zhu Ba-jie(also named Greedy pig) in Gao Lao Zhuang as his second apprentice. In Liu Sha River, he conquered Sha Wu-jing as his third apprentice. Four of them go to the west together to search for the Buddhist sutras<\/span><\/p>\n

  Most rightly hold the 1986 adaptation close to their hearts, with good reason, but this has replaced it for me. It’s much longer, and feels just as faithful, if not more. It’s certainly closest to what I imagined reading the book, and interprets the many stories with a greater attention to detail.<\/p>\n

  This is a delightful WuKong! Charming and cheeky, despite wearing a restrictive latex mask it’s an incredibly expressive performance, made through great physicality and great vocal ticks. Same goes for the rest of the cast. It’s amazing how much personality Zhu Bajie squeezes from behind his static latex pig mask! Xuanzang is one-note throughout, I’ve seen adaptations where there’s been more personality injected into him, but honestly this is how he reads in the book.<\/p>\n

  It’s so good, you even forgive the FX. This was an epic-budget show, but the FX work veers between ‘charmingly bad in a stylised way’ to ‘my first After Effects class’. It is comically ATROCIOUS. How they let it out looking like this I don’t know. The color grading is bad too, it’s all over the place even within the same sequence often. A shame since it’s otherwise filmed nicely, with great in-camera vistas and diverse rural locations.<\/p>\n

  Yet, the show as a whole is so wonderful, you honestly forget the bad visuals and just get hooked on the wonderful odyssey. It’s a shame that as a US viewer, there is no legal local way to see it with English subtitles, although you can order the SD DVD box from China but I’m honestly surprised it isn’t on any streaming service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
