On 10 September 2012, it was announced that\u00a0Cynthia Nixon\u00a0was set to play Emily Dickinson in a biopic directed by\u00a0Terence Davies.[3]<\/sup>\u00a0In May 2015, after a long time in\u00a0development hell,\u00a0A Quiet Passion<\/i>\u00a0finally began production in\u00a0Belgium.[4]<\/sup>\u00a0The film was shot at\u00a0AED Studios\u00a0on a replica of\u00a0Dickinson’s house.[5]<\/sup>\u00a0Additional scenes were also filmed in\u00a0Amherst\u00a0and\u00a0Pelham, Massachusetts.[6]<\/sup>\u00a0Jennifer Ehle\u00a0was cast in a key supporting role opposite Nixon.[7]<\/sup>[8]<\/sup><\/p>\n

The initial critical response was positive: it was highly praised by the British nationals\u00a0The Guardian<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0The Independent<\/i>, which described the film as a ‘Masterpiece of Mood’. Richard Brody of\u00a0The New Yorker<\/i>\u00a0called it a “masterwork” and stated that the film would “take its place as one of [Davies’] finest creations”.[9]<\/sup>\u00a0Had the film been given a limited release in the United States before 2017, Brody would have placed it first in his list of best films of 2016.[10]<\/sup>\u00a0The film holds a 77\/100 on\u00a0Metacritic.[11]<\/sup><\/p>\n

The response from audience members has been highly polarized.
