Despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, young Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. Coco<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is a 2017 American\u00a03D<\/a>\u00a0computer-animated<\/a>\u00a0musical<\/a>\u00a0fantasy film<\/a>\u00a0produced by\u00a0Pixar Animation Studios<\/a>\u00a0and released by\u00a0Walt Disney Pictures<\/a>.[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Based on an original idea by\u00a0Lee Unkrich<\/a>, it is directed by Unkrich and co-directed by\u00a0Adrian Molina<\/a>.[11]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The story follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel Rivera who is accidentally transported to the land of the dead, where he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family among the living.<\/p>\n

The concept of the film is based on the Mexican holiday of the\u00a0Day of the Dead<\/a>. The film was scripted by Molina and Matthew Aldrich from a story by Unkrich, Jason Katz, Aldrich and Molina. Pixar began developing the animation in 2016; Unkrich and some of the film’s crew visited Mexico for inspiration. Composer\u00a0Michael Giacchino<\/a>, who had worked on prior Pixar animated features, composed the score. The film’s voice cast stars\u00a0Anthony Gonzalez<\/a>,\u00a0Gael Garc\u00eda Bernal<\/a>,\u00a0Benjamin Bratt<\/a>,\u00a0Alanna Ubach<\/a>,\u00a0Ren\u00e9e Victor<\/a>,\u00a0Ana Ofelia Murgu\u00eda<\/a>, and\u00a0Edward James Olmos<\/a>. It is the first-ever film with a nine-digit budget to feature an all-Latino cast, with a cost of $175\u2013200\u00a0million.[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Coco<\/i>\u00a0premiered on October 20, 2017 during the\u00a0Morelia International Film Festival<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Morelia, Mexico<\/a>.[13]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It was theatrically released in Mexico the following week, the weekend before D\u00eda de los Muertos, and became the highest-grossing film of all-time in the country.[14]<\/a><\/sup>[15]<\/a><\/sup>[16]<\/a><\/sup>[17]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It was released in the United States on November 22, 2017, and has grossed $681 million worldwide. The film received praise for its animation, vocal performances, musical score, songs, emotional story and respect to\u00a0Mexican culture<\/a>. It earned numerous accolades, was chosen by the\u00a0National Board of Review<\/a>\u00a0as the\u00a0best animated film of 2017<\/a>,[18]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and received\u00a0Annie Award<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0BAFTA Award<\/a>\u00a0nominations for Best Animated Feature Film. It also won for\u00a0Best Animated Feature Film<\/a>\u00a0and was nominated for\u00a0Best Original Song<\/a>\u00a0(“Remember Me<\/a>“) at the\u00a075th Golden Globe Awards<\/a>, as well as winning the\u00a0Best Animated Feature<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Best Song<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a023rd Critics’ Choice Awards<\/a>. It also earned nominations for\u00a0Best Animated Feature<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Best Original Song<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a090th Academy Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n
