12 Years a Slave<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is a 2013\u00a0period drama film<\/a>\u00a0and an adaptation of the 1853\u00a0slave narrative<\/a>\u00a0memoir\u00a0Twelve Years a Slave<\/a><\/i>\u00a0by\u00a0Solomon Northup<\/a>, a New York State-born free\u00a0African-American<\/a>\u00a0man who was kidnapped in\u00a0Washington, D.C.<\/a>\u00a0by two conmen in 1841 and sold into\u00a0slavery<\/a>. Northup was put to work on plantations in the state of\u00a0Louisiana<\/a>\u00a0for 12 years before being released. Principal photography took place in\u00a0New Orleans, Louisiana<\/a>, from June 27 to August 13, 2012. The locations used were four historic\u00a0antebellum plantations<\/a>:\u00a0Felicity<\/a>,\u00a0Bocage<\/a>,\u00a0Destrehan<\/a>, and\u00a0Magnolia<\/a>. Of the four, Magnolia is nearest to the actual plantation where Northup was held.<\/p>\n
